The Facts
On Thursday, December 2nd at approximately 3:53PM CDT, the utility provider for our primary datacenter provider (PLTXCO) experienced a power surge. The surge caused the primary power distribution unit (PDU) at PLTXCO to fail. At that time, the secondary PDU became overloaded resulting in a full power outage for this facility.

The primary PDU was replaced and power restored at 4:07PM CDT. The first services came back online five (5) minutes later. All FireHost customer servers are set to boot from a hard shutdown in disk check mode. Booting in disc check mode requires extra time to start your services, but this extra step helps reduce the risk of data loss. This process took just under an hour, and the last customer’s service was restored at 5:06PM CDT.
Our Position
To say that we are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you is an understatement. We realize that this type of outage is inexcusable to you or any hosting customer, and we hope you believe that our team did (and is continuing to do) a world-class job responding to the situation technically, and to your direct inquiries.
The Future
We are implementing changes to help ensure this type of situation does not cause an interruption to you again. We will provide details of the coming changes as the plan is finalized.
UPDATE: We’re pleased to announce our expansion into a new data center facility. This expansion will benefit all current and future FireHost customers. Read all about it here.

International, national, and even local considerations shape IT Security policies for the whole industry. However, as security and information technology professionals, it’s often difficult to find time to step away from our desks and really evaluate the scope of the ever-changing environment in which we operate. SecureWorld events provide the perfect opportunity to do just that.
With events across the nation, SecureWorld Expositions provide the platform and venue for leaders and “doers” in information technology and security to collaborate and make strides toward the end goal of comprehensive, globally unified security policies. All while earning 16 CPE credits that may be applied to your CISSP.
Chris Davis, Director of Security and Compliance at FireHost will be part of an industry panel attacking the difficult issue of Effective Compliance Management in Today’s Workplace. The best security minds from ArcSight, Shavlik, and Tripwire will participate in the hour long conversation scheduled for November 3rd in Dallas as well.
FireHost is proud to help lead an event that provides such broad reach on a global topic, and we invite you to use discount code “FIREDAL10″ when registering to receive a significant savings off the published rates. If you can’t make it to Dallas next month, perhaps one of SecureWorld Expo‘s future events will fit your schedule.

Effective today, all FireHost customers on Secure Servers virtualized with VMWare will have even more visibility into and control over your hosting environment. Now, you can see several, key performance indicators for each secure server individually and in real time:
- How much storage space is being used.
- How much memory is being used.
- If you have enough processor power provisioned to meet your traffic flow and web application objectives.
In addition to viewing server resources, you can now reboot and shutdown/startup your Secure Server autonomously, without contacting our support engineers. This feature in particular gives Account Administrators and Technical Contacts the power to restart a server if it’s non-responsive for any reason and facilitate software upgrades on your own schedule.
With the enhancements live today, you can store custom comments and instructions for each Secure Server too. Customers can use this to communicate internally when several developers or technical administrators are present, and FireHost support engineers will be able to reference the instructions you enter any time they’re working on your environment.
